China’s coal imports rose by 14% m-o-m to 23.5 mnt in July after falling consecutively for two months, customs data showed. The rise in imports was supported by strong power demand in the country during summers and economic recovery after lockdown restrictions were lifted in June. However, on a y-o-y basis, imports fell by 22% amid increased domestic coal production which stood at 2.4 bnt during Jan-Jun’22.
