The bulk freight rates have not yet shown any downward trend due to shrinkage in shipments of coal and iron ore to China as the shipments were uninterrupted along the other routes. Demand for Coking Coal and iron ore is losing momentum in China as that government ordered production cut for steel by 50% during mid-Nov’17 to mid-Mar’18 to lower atmospheric pollution levels.
However, the demand for cargo vessels will not decrease as shipments of Petcoke from USA will commence shortly as the refineries there are readying for exporting the fuel after a temporary suspension after the occurrence of the Harvey hurricane in late Aug’17.
As the demand for cargo vessels remained firm, the Baltic Dry Index exhibited a rising trend. On 19 Oct’17, the index was reported at 1,578 points, up from the 1,485 points as on 13 Oct’17.
