Brazil Pig Iron Exports Gain in September’17 – Customs Data

Brazil, the world’s second-largest Pig iron exporter, has exported about 0.23 MnT Pig iron in September 2017, according to trade statistics released by Brazilian customs.

The exports have registered a gain of 64.28% M-o-M & 15% Y-o-Y in Sep’17 against 0.14 MnT in Aug’17 & 0.20 MnT in Aug’16. In the month of Sep’17, United States has imported approximately 52% (0.12 MnT) Pig iron from Brazil.

Further, in the first 9 months of CY17 (Jan-Sep’17), Pig iron exports declined marginally by 2.36% to 1.65 MnT against 1.69 MnT in same preceding CY16.

Prior to this, in CY 2016 (Jan-Dec) the pig iron export was around 2.18 MnT & in CY 2015 at 2.75 MnT.

Country wise exports:

The largest importer of Brazilian Pig iron during Sep’17 was United States (0.12 MnT), followed by Netherlands (0.04 MnT), Italy (0.02 MnT) & Turkey (0.02 MnT).

In the month, the major export were from the ports of Rio De Janeiro (0.10 MnT), Sao Luis (0.09 MnT) & Vitoria (0.03 MnT).

In the total pig iron exports during CY 2017 (Jan-Sep), the favorable export destination of Brazilian pig iron was – United States (44.20%), Netherlands (15.18%), Italy (12.21%), Mexico (8.26%) & Taiwan (8.09%).

Quarterly Analysis

The SteelMint’s Statistics report showed exports for pig iron during Q2 FY18 (Jul-Sept’17) at 0.60 MnT which increase by 22.44% Q-o-Q when it compared with Q1 FY18 at 0.49 MnT. Similarly, on yearly premises the exports slumped to 11.76% in Q2 FY18 against Q2 FY17 at 0.68 MnT.

Further it was also noticed on half yearly calculations the exports fell by 6.83% to 1.09 MnT in H1 FY18 compared with 1.17 MnT in H1 FY17.

In context to export prices, the fresh export offers for basic grade pig iron are reported at USD 350-370/MT FOB Brazil & USD 365-370/MT FOB India.
