Recent trade statistics released by Brazil Customs show that Brazil has exported around 24.05 MnT iron ore in Apr’17. Iron ore exports decreased by 34% in Apr’17 against 36.4 MnT in Mar’17.Brazilian iron ore export volumes also decreased by 17% Y-o-Y for the April month compared to 2016 where it was 28.9 MnT then.
In the first 4 months of 2017, the country exported 114 MnT iron ore which was similar to quantity exported for the same period in 2016 at 114.2 MnT.

The average export price for Brazilian iron ore in Oct’16 was around USD 67.5/MT, FoB Brazil, up by USD 3.6/MT from Mar’17 as it was USD 63.9/MT, FoB Brazil. However, on Y-o-Y basis, average export prices rose by USD 34.2/MT against USD 33.1/MT, FoB Brazil in Apr’16.
According to data provided by Inchcape Shipping Services, Brazil, – the country exported 25.64 MnT iron ore via sea route. Vale, the world’s largest iron ore producer exports around 89% of iron ore via sea route. In Apr’17, the miners exported 25.64 MnT iron ore via sea route, Anglo American – 1.02 MnT, CSN – 0.91 MnT, and Trafigura – 0.85 MnT. The variation between the numbers provided by customs and ISS, Brazil is due the different methodology used to present the vessel line up status.
China, the largest iron ore importer of Brazilian iron ore imported around 54% of total Brazilian exports in Apr’17, whereas Netherlands contributed 7%, Malaysia 6%, South Korea 5% and Japan and Oman contributed 4% each via sea route.
