BIR: China’s ferrous scrap consumption drops by 2.8% in CY’21

  • China’s steel scrap consumption dropped by 2.8% to 226.21 mnt last year, according to Bureau of International Recycling (BIR).
  • However, China remained the world’s largest scrap user owing to an 11.5% increase in its scrap-intensive electric furnace production.
  • Increased steel scrap consumption was registered in the EU-27 (+16.7% to 87.853 mn t), the US (+18.3% to 59.4 mn t), Turkey (+15.7% to 34.813 mn t) and Japan (+19% to 34.727 mn t).
