- Capesize index falls 1.5%, ending four-session winning streak
- Panamax index drops 2% to a fresh two-month low, while Supramax slips marginally
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) fell by 33 points, or 1.23%, d-o-d to 2,660 on 23 October from 2,693 on 22 October, snapping a four-session winning streak. All three vessel segments recorded declines, with Panamax posting the steepest loss, followed by Capesize and Supramax. Despite the daily setback, the benchmark remained up for the week, marking its second consecutive weekly gain, supported by strength in the larger-vessel segment.
Segment-wise performance
- Capesize index ends four-day rally: The Baltic Capesize Index (BCI) declined by 57 points, or 1.48%, d-o-d to 3,791 from 3,848, ending its four-session winning streak. Despite the pullback, the segment remained a key contributor to the BDI’s weekly gains.
- Panamax index extends decline: The Baltic Panamax Index (BPI) fell by 42 points, or 1.95%, d-o-d to 2,109 from 2,151, reaching its lowest level since 24 August. The continued weakness highlights persistent pressure on the coal and grain shipping segment.
- Supramax index edges lower: The Baltic Supramax Index (BSI) slipped by 3 points, or 0.16%, d-o-d to 1,887 from 1,890, easing after reaching a multi-year high in the previous session. The marginal decline suggests relative resilience compared with the sharper losses in the other vessel segments.
