Baltic Dry Index rises for second straight session, hits one-week high

  • Capesize rates rebound sharply on improved Pacific iron ore freight activity
  • Panamax rates decline further, while Supramax remains unchanged

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) rose by 47 points, or 1.85%, to 2,593 on 20 October from 2,546 on 19 October, extending its gains for a second consecutive session and reaching a near one-week high. The increase was primarily driven by a sharp recovery in Capesize rates, potentially reflecting improved demand for iron ore and coal shipments or tighter vessel availability on key routes.

Segment-wise performance

  • Capesize index rebounds: The Baltic Capesize Index (BCI) rose by 157 points, or 4.67%, to 3,522 on 20 October from 3,365 a day earlier, marking its second consecutive session of gains. The recovery followed a prolonged decline and was supported by renewed activity in Pacific iron ore freight markets, including increased miner participation and firmer resistance from vessel owners.
  • Panamax remains under pressure: The Baltic Panamax Index (BPI) fell by 39 points, or 1.71%, to 2,247 from 2,286, extending its decline for a second consecutive session. The weakness may reflect subdued cargo enquiries and softer chartering demand for coal and grain shipments, alongside continued pressure on freight rates across major trading routes.
  • Supramax remains unchanged: The Baltic Supramax Index (BSI) held steady at 1,868, indicating a balance between cargo demand and vessel availability at the overall index level.
