Baltic Dry Index rally pauses as Capesize dips

  • Panamax rises but fails to offset drop in Capesize
  • Supramax edges up on steady Atlantic, Pacific markets

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) edged down 2 points, or 0.06%, d-o-d to 3,430 on 23 September, after reaching 3,432 in the previous session. The marginal decline reflected a divergence across vessel segments, with stronger Panamax activity offsetting a pullback in Capesize rates.

Segment-wise performance

  • Capesize softens: Baltic Capesize Index (BCI) fell 31 points, or 0.5%, d-o-d to 5,861 against 5,892 on 22 September, as Pacific tonnage availability remained relatively comfortable. However, Atlantic activity, particularly Brazil-China, continued to provide underlying support.
  • Panamax gains: Baltic Panamax Index (BPI) climbed up by 34 points, or 1.5%, d-o-d to 2,333 against 2,299, marking the strongest segment gain. Improved fixing activity and firmer cargo enquiries supported the recovery.
  • Supramax stable: Baltic Supramax Index (BSI) increased marginally d-o-d by 2 points, or 0.1%, to 1,778 against 1,776. The BSI edged up as steady demand across the Atlantic and Pacific markets was largely offset by ample vessel availability and limited fresh cargo enquiries, keeping rate gains subdued.

Outlook

The BDI is likely to remain largely stable at elevated levels in the near term, as stronger Panamax momentum helps offset softer Capesize rates. However, the marginal decline on 23 September suggests the recent rally is losing some momentum, with further upside dependent on sustained cargo activity across the major segments.
