- Capesize extends losses for third consecutive session
- Supramax gains modestly, bucking broader weakness
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) declined by 62 points, or 1.8%, to 3,445 on 14 September from 3,507 on 11 September, falling to its lowest level in around two weeks. The decline was primarily driven by continued weakness in Capesize freight rates, while Panamax also edged lower. Supramax, however, extended its gains, providing limited support to the overall index.
Segment-wise performance
- Capesize extends losing streak: The Baltic Capesize Index (BCI) fell sharply by 168 points, or 2.7%, to 5,912 on 14 September from 6,080 on 11 September, extending its decline to a third consecutive session. The segment recorded the steepest correction among the three major vessel categories, making it the principal drag on the BDI.
- Panamax slips marginally: The Baltic Panamax Index (BPI) edged down by 14 points, or 0.6%, to 2,393 from 2,407. The comparatively modest decline indicates that Panamax experienced less pronounced weakness than Capesize during the session.
- Supramax bucks trend: The Baltic Supramax Index (BSI) increased by 6 points, or 0.4%, to 1,725 from 1,719, extending its upward movement. The gain contrasted with declines across the larger vessel segments, although its modest size was insufficient to offset the broader weakness in the BDI.
