Baltic Dry Index dips d-o-d as larger vessel segments decline

  • Capesize slips for 2nd session; Panamax inches down
  • Supramax bucks trend with modest gain

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) fell by 14 points (0.4%) d-o-d to 3,507 on 11 September 2026, from 3,521 on 10 September, marking its second consecutive session of decline and taking the index to its lowest level since 3 September.

The weakness was led by Capesize, while Panamax was largely unchanged. Supramax was the only major segment to post a gain. The mixed performance suggests a cautious near-term freight market, with softer sentiment in the larger vessel segments partly offset by resilience in Supramax.

Segment-wise performance

  • Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): The Capesize index fell by 42 points (0.7%) d-o-d to 6,080, from 6,122, extending its decline to a second consecutive session. The continued weakness in the largest vessel segment remains the primary drag on the BDI and points to softer freight momentum in the Capesize market.
  • Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): The Panamax index edged down by 2 points (0.1%) d-o-d to 2,407, from 2,409. The negligible movement indicates that the segment remains broadly stable, with neither a meaningful strengthening nor deterioration in near-term freight conditions.
  • Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): The Supramax index increased by 6 points (0.4%) d-o-d to 1,719, from 1,713. The gain marks a modest recovery and makes Supramax the only major segment to advance, indicating comparatively firmer conditions in the smaller vessel market.

Outlook

The near-term outlook remains cautious, with the BDI facing continued pressure from weakness in Capesize. The second consecutive decline in Capesize suggests that the recent freight recovery has lost some momentum. Panamax is likely to remain broadly range-bound, while firmer Supramax activity could provide limited downside support. A sustained recovery in the BDI will likely require a turnaround in Capesize freight sentiment and stronger cargo activity across the larger vessel segments.
