Australian monthly coal exports have recorded a sizeable growth in Mar’18, after falling in Feb’18.
As per the data provided by Australian customs, coal export from the country had increased 8% M-o-M to 30.02 MnT in Mar’18, compared with 27.92 MnT in Feb’18.
However, on the yearly basis, exports were 3% lower than the levels achieved in the month of Mar’17.
Australian non-coking coal exports had increased 8% M-o-M to 16.27 MnT in Mar’18, compared with 15 MnT in Feb’18. With offers soaring for South African 5500 NAR coal, Australian 5500 NAR non-coking coal had emerged as an alternative to the South African material, taking advantage of a USD 13-14/MT differential between the two coal prices.
Australian 5500 NAR coal was offered at USD 76-77/MT, FoB Newcastle; on the other hand, South African 5500 NAR coal prices were assessed at USD 89-90/MT, on FoB basis this week.
Australian Coking coal exports were recorded at 13.75 MnT in Mar’18, up 6% M-o-M from 12.92 MnT in Feb’18.
During the first quarter of CY18 (Jan’18-Mar’18), Australian coal exports have remained almost unchanged at 89.47 MnT in comparison with 89.53 MnT coal exports recorded during Jan’17-Mar’17.
Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the largest importer of Australian coal in Mar’18, followed by China. While, India replaced South Korea to become the third-largest coal importer during the month.
Japanese coal import had increased 4% on the month to 9.85 MnT in Mar’18 compared with 9.44 MnT in Feb’18.
Chinese coal import had noted significant fall of 31% Y-o-Y to 5.8 MnT in Mar’18 compared with 8.39 MnT in Mar’17. Import had also fell 2% M-o-M from 5.91 MnT in Feb’18.
Indian coal imports had increased 43% M-o-M to 4.56 MnT in Mar’18, which was also 39% higher on the year compared with 3.29 MnT in Mar’17. On the other hand, South Korea coal imports were recorded 3.24 MnT in Mar’18, down 17% M-o-M from 3.9 MnT in Feb’18.
