Australia: Port Hedland Iron Ore Exports at 479 MnT in 2016

Western Australia’s Port Hedland the world’s largest bulk export terminal exported 479 MnT iron ore in 2016. Iron ore exports have witnessed an increase of 7.3% against 446 MnT in 2015.

In Dec’16, the exports from Port Hadland have hit all time high in 2016 at 43.94 MnT. Exports moved up sharply amid increase in global iron ore prices in Dec’16.

The volume of exports grew up 6% M-o-M as it was 41.4 MnT in Nov’16 and 17% Y-o-Y as it was 37.5 MnT in Dec’15.

Chinese iron ore  imports from Port Hedland was registered at 396.2 MnT in 2016. Imports have witnessed an increase of 5% Y-o-Y as it was at 377.8 MnT in 2015.

In Dec’16, Chinese intake of iron ore recorded highest in 2016 at 37.4 MnT. On M-o-M basis, imports moved up 11.3% and 16.5% Y-o-Y.

Iron ore exports to South Korea also increased by 81.8% Y-o-Y and was registered at 3.29 MnT. Alongside, exports to Japan was 14.8% Y-o-Y to 1.74 MnT in Dec’16.

Port Hedland has delivered a total throughput of around 446 MnT iron ore in 2015 and 414 MnT in 2014. BHP Billiton and FMG (Fortescue Metals Group) exports iron ore mainly from Port Hedland, while Rio Tinto ships from Port Dampier.
