Australia: Non-Coking Coal Exports Down 11% M-o-M in Jun’17

Australia is the top coal exporters in the world, which exports both Coking and Non-Coking grade of coal. However, exports of Non-Coking coal have fallen during the month of Jun’17.

Australia has exported about 13 MnT Non-Coking coal in Jun’17 against 14.58 MnT exported during May’17, thus recording a decline of 11% M-o-M , according to the vessel line-up data maintained by CoalMint research.

So far, Australia has exported 81.64 MnT Non-coking coal in CY17 (Jan’17-Jun’17).

Australian Thermal Coal Prices:
China’s decision to ban coal import at small ports has affected Australian thermal coal prices. Also, increasing coal stock at Chinese ports are pulling coal prices down.

Currently, Spot prices for Australian 5500 NAR coal was assessed at USD 69/MT, FoB Newcastle.

Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the top Non-Coking coal importer from Australia in Jun’17 followed by Korea, China, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Coal import from Japan decreased 7% M-o-M to 6.18 MnT in Jun’17 compared with 6.64MnT in May’17.

Korea leapfrogged China to become second-largest Non-coking coal importer in Jun’17, imports from Japan rose 28% M-o-M to 1.63 MnT in Jun’17. While, coal imports from China fell 34% M-o-M to 1.61 MnT during the month.

Major Coal Handling Port:
Australian Non-Coking coal shipments are majorly handled at Newcastle port and Port of Kemble. During Jun’17, around 12.62 MnT non-coking coal was exported from Newcastle port. While exports from Port of Kemble increased from 0.33 MnT in May’17 to 0.38 MnT in Jun’17.
