Russian coal exports have jumped 60% on the monthly basis to 16.84 MnT in Aug’17, according to the data provided by customs. Exports were however 3% lower on the year compared with 17.30 MnT in Aug’16.
During the first 8 months of the CY17(Jan’17-Aug’17), the country has exported 117.74 MnT coal, with an increase of 8% Y-o-Y compared with 108.70 MnT coal exported during the same period in CY16.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Non Coking coal exports rose 51% M-o-M to 12.52 MnT in Aug’17, had 74% share in the country’s total coal exports. Coking coal exports increased nearly two fold to 2.08 MnT.
Of the other major coal grades, exports of Met coke decline 12% M-o-M to 0.22 MnT, while Anthracite and Pet coke exports recorded an increase of 84% and 143% on the month respectively.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
South Korea replaced China to become the largest-coal importer from China in Aug’17.
Imports from Korea surged 146% M-o-M to 2.58 MnT in Aug’17, but remained 13% lower on the year compared with 2.98 MnT in Aug’16. Chinese coal import during the month was 2.32 MnT, up 97% M-o-M.
Japan was the third-largest coal importer in Aug’17. Imports from the country increased 139% M-o-M to 2.01 MnT, still down 5% Y-o-Y than the imports of 2.12 MnT coal in Aug’16.
Other major coal importers during the month were: Turkey, Netherlands, UK, Taiwan and Ukraine.

Russia Coal Imports:
Russia’s monthly coal import was 1.97 MnT in Aug’17, up 9% M-o-M. Imports have also increased 29% Y-o-Y compared with 1.53 MnT in Aug’16.
So far Russia has imported 14.07 MnT coal in CY17 (till Aug’17), with Kazakhstan catering 86% of the total quantity.
