Petcoke imports rose by around 36.7% in July’17 over the imports in the previous month, an analysis of the import data collected by CoalMint Research shows.
In July’17, Petcoke imports in India were at around 1.03 MnT, which was higher that the imports of around 0.75 MnT in Jun’17.

On a year-on-year comparison, the imports during the month under review were lower by 28.97% than the imports of around 1.45 MnT in July’16.
The surge in the imports during the month was a result of the higher consumption by the cement sector. Demand for Petcoke was stronger from the cement sector during the month under review. Also, the rise in the prices of USA coal also had forced the cement producers to lower the coal consumption and use more Petcoke.
A break-up of the country-wise imports during the month shows that imports from Saudi Arabia dipped but increased from USA. Importers tried to avoid Saudi Arabia origin Petcoke as it is characterized by higher Sulphur content. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) announced a slew of measures for safeguarding the atmosphere from pollution caused by emission of Sulphur while burning Petcoke in industries.

Among the various ports in India, the Krishnapatnam port had handled the highest volume of Petcoke imports during the month, followed by the Kandla port.

Out of the importers during the month, Ultratech Cement was the highest importer with the imports of 0.35 MnT; followed by Shree Cement with 0.16 MnT and Dalmia Cement with 0.10 MnT. Other importers during the month were: Birla Corporation, Penna Cement, Nirma, Swiss Singapore, Sagar Cement and OCL India.
