Coal Ministry had terminated the fifth tranche of Coal mine auction earmarked for the specified end use in Iron and Steel Production.
The Government has officially notified that the tender process for the auction has been closed in accordance with the clause 3.3.2(b) of the tender document, which states that “if the aggregate of total number of Technically Qualified Bids (none of which is a cluster) and the total number of Clusters is less than 3, then no Technically Qualified Bid shall be considered to be Qualified Bid and the tender process for the Coal mine shall stand terminated.”
Accordingly, the tender process for all the 6 coal mines nominated under the fifth tranche auction has been terminated.

The Coal auction had received poor response from Steel manufacturers, as most of the steel industries are in stressed condition. Citing the bad condition, Steel ministry had even urged Coal ministry to carry on the auction process. However, the government stood firm by the decision to terminate the auction process.
Earlier, Indian Government had nominated 6 coking coal mines under the fifth tranche of auctions, to cater the growing demand of the fuel in steel making. As, steel manufacturers are forced to import coking coal, due to limited availability of the fuel in the country.
In FY16, India had imported 47.37 MnT coking coal, the data available with CoalMint shows.
