- SAIL to boost crude coal tar availability in Aug after no Durgapur auction in Jul
- Higher supply could pressure prices amid subdued downstream demand
SAIL’s Durgapur Steel Plant is scheduled to auction 10,000 t of crude coal tar on 13 August 2026, following a pause in auction activity during July, according to data maintained by BigMint. The resumption of auctions is likely to improve spot availability and support downstream procurement amid ongoing demand from the coal tar processing and carbon-product industries.
Meanwhile, SAIL IISCO has scheduled an auction for 4,260 t of crude coal tar on 11 August, while SAIL Bokaro is set to auction 840 t on 12 August. The clustering of auctions across major SAIL plants, with an offered volume of around 15,000 t, is expected to increase near-term availability of crude coal tar and provide additional supply to downstream users.
The increased auction activity in August may reflect the regularisation of by-product sales following the July lull. However, the impact on prices will depend on auction participation, downstream demand, prevailing coal tar prices, and operating rates of domestic steel and coke producers.
