India: Ship Breaking Prices in Alang under pressure; fall by INR 200-500/MT W-o-W

Ship cutting plates and melting scrap prices in Alang (Gujarat), Asia’s largest ship recycling yard, noticed a fall of  INR 200-500/MT W-o-W. Participants mentioned falling steel prices is a major factor for price correction.

HMS Scrap prices is also under pressure due to falling Sponge iron and Billet prices. Prices have declined by INR 200-300/MT W-o-W in Mumbai and Mandi Gobindgarh markets.

Trade participants also mentioned that lot of imported Scrap, which were booked in Nov/Dec, will be delivered in Jan’14. This in turn has made Scrap buyers based in West & North India to wait & watch. A leading steel manufacturer based in Ahmedabad told to SteelMint that about 20,000 MT of Shredded and HMS Scrap order is pending to be delivered at Pipapava Port at an average price of USD 330/MT. Whereas, bulk ship breaking prices in the global market have gone up by USD 5-10/MT last week.

Alang is the largest ship recycling yard in Asia, which handled about 305 ships in 2013 and about 286 ships in 2014. Alang is also a major source for Scrap generation in India.
