According to data presented by Chinese customs, India exported around 5,60,000 tons of iron ore in the month of January 2013, significantly down from corresponding month in previous financial year.
The iron ore sector has been struggling to cope up with several issues including illegal mining and ban on mining in Karnataka and Goa – two major iron ore producing states.
A ban on mining in Karnataka was imposed about one and half years back and mining in Goa was banned in October last year.
Industry experts do not see anything significant for exports of iron ore in the coming union budget (to be announced on 28th Feb). Current duty on exports is 30%.
