Odisha: 35 mines operating under deemed extension

Bhubaneswar: As many as 35 iron ore and manganese mines are operating even after the expiry of their lease period.

These mines are operating well under the provisions of the rule 24 (A) (6) of Mineral Concession Rules.1960 and with all the statutory permissions, according to the state steel and mines minister Rajnikant Singh.

Tata Steel has maximum 7 iron ore and Manganese mines among this list of 35 mines which includes Khandabandh, Katamati, Joda West, Bamebari, Joda East, Manmora, Guruda, Tringpahar mines.

Similarly OMC’s Daitari iron ore mines, Seremanda-Bhadrasahi iron ore and Manganese mines and Kurmitar iron ore mines.

The list also includes Koida kadadihi mines of Essel mining and Industries ltd and Tantra, Raikela & Bandhal iron ore mines of Jindal Steel and Power, Nuagaon iron ore mines of KJS Ahluwalia, Roida-1 iron ore mines of MESCO.

On the other hand public sector steel major SAIL’s Bolani iron ore mines in the Keonjhar district, Barsuan-Kalta iron ore mines in the Sundargarh District are also working under deemed extension.

Rungta Sons’ Sanindupur iron ore & Bauxite mines and Rungta mines’ Kolmong, Kanthor-Koira Manganese mines are also operating under deemed extention.

However, the minister has made it clear that the miners need to avail the permissions of IBM, MoEF, GoI and State Pollution Control Board for producing more than the stipulated limit, but for this there is no provision in the law for state government’s recommendation on behalf of the miners.
