Pet coke consumption in the country for the month of July 2019 is reported as 1.55 MnT (million metric tons), against 1.76 MnT same month last year, registering a reduction of approximately 12.1%.
On cumulative basis, the consumption during Apr’19-Jul’19 is reported as 7.48 MnT against 78.69 MnT in last year same period, registering a reduction of 2.6%.
Notably, pet coke consumption has consistently decreased from April onward on a month-to-month basis.
The negative growth in consumption of pet coke for the month of July and on cumulative basis is mainly due to lower imports of pet coke by major cement industries as a result of low production of cement because of poor demand. This has been also contributed by softening of import coal prices; leading to replacing pet coke with imported coal by major cement industries.
It may be observed that the pet coke consumption during Apr’19-Jul’19 is approximately 53% more than the total domestic production, which was approximately 70% more during same period last year. Thus, the drop in ratio of consumption to production during the above period indicates lower consumption and import of pet coke during the same period over the last year.
