Japan is the world’s 2nd largest steel producing country as well as 2nd largest steel exporter.
As per recent data released by Japan customs it is observed that the nation has exported about 330,000 MT Billet in September 2017.
The exports have registered an increase of 10% in Sep’17 against Aug’17 (M-o-M) & Sep’16 (Y-o-Y). Taiwan maintains top destination of Japan’s billet exports in Sep 2017 as the nation has imported approximately 57% billet (190,000 MT).
Coming to total exports in CY17 (Jan-Sep), the nation has exported about 2.89 MnT Billet; down by 12.42% as compared to 3.30 MnT in the same preceding last year.
Prior to this, in CY16 (Jan-Dec) the country’s billet export was around 4.26 MnT & in CY15 at 4.56 MnT.
Further in the month of September 2017, the crude steel production of Japan was around 8.62 MnT and in CY17(Jan-Sep) it was approximately 78.26 MnT.
Country wise:-
During Sep 2017, the largest importer of Japan made Billet/Blooms was Taiwan, South Korea & United States which imported 190,000 MT, 70,000 MT & 40,000 MT respectively.
Similarly in the total Billet exports during CY 2017 (Jan-Sep), the major buyers of Japan made Billet was – Taiwan (42.51%), South Korea (29.94%), United States (10.78%), Thailand (6.99%) & Philippines (3.73%).

1. During Jan-Sep’17, Japan imported around 58.14% of iron ore from Australia, which was around 54.57 MnT current offer of Fe 62% Fines are at USD 49/MT FoB Australia, from Dampier/Cape Lambert port
2. Japanese H2 grade ferrous scrap export prices at Yen 30,500-31,000/MT (USD 268-272/MT) FOB Tokyo Bay- Sources
3. The export offers of 150*150 IS 2830 grade billet are currently at USD 470-475/MT FoB India & 125*125, Q235 China at USD 485/MT CNF Middle East.
