Japan Coal Imports down 16% M-o-M in Feb’17

Japan Coal imports have fallen after achieving a 17-months high of 18.09 MnT in Jan’17.

Japan second-largest coal importer in the world, the country has acquired 15.27 MnT coal in Feb’17. Imports have decreased by 16% M-o-M, besides yearly imports fell by 4% compared with 15.90 MnT in Feb’16, as per data released by Japanese Customs.

Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Japan mainly imports Bituminous coal followed by Coking coal, Coke and semi-coke, Anthracite and Pet Coke.

In Feb’17, imports of bituminous coal fell by 10% M-o-M to 10.89 MnT, Coking coal fell by 24% M-o-M to 2.84 MnT.

All other coal commodities imports have fallen over the month, except Pet coke which rose by 12% M-o-M to 0.47 MnT in Feb’17.

Major Exporting Countries:
Australia is the major coal supplier to Japan in Feb’17, followed by Indonesia, Russia, USA and Canada.

Australia exported 9.78 MnT in Feb’17, however, exports have fallen by 14% M-o-M compared with 11.35 MnT in Jan’17. Yearly exports also fell by 2%.

Indonesia second-largest coal exporter supplied 2.62 MnT coal in Feb’17, down by 15% M-o-M and 245 Y-o-Y.

Russia third-largest exporter saw improvement in coal supplies to Japan, with an increase of 12% M-o-M to 1.13 MnT in Feb’17. Yearly exports also rose by 30% compared with 1 MnT in Feb’16.
