World Sponge Iron (DRI) output down by over 12% in 2012- Reports

In a preliminary report by World Steel Association (WSA) on DRI (Sponge Iron) output across the globe, shows that overall production has gone down by over 12% , specially drastic downfall in Indian output.

The worldsteel data shows that India is the largest DRI producer among the countries surveyed in 2012 with an annual capacity of over 35 million tonnes. India's estimated DRI output was 19.8 million metric tons in the year 2012 (Jan-Dec), decreasing by 28.2 percent compared to 2011 levels.

Whereas, Iran outperformed not only in terms of rise in crude steel production but also DRI output  with stood at 11.6 million mt, up 14.1 percent year on year.
