India Steel Industry, which consumes about 80% of Iron ore/intermediary products and 20% Scrap for total crude steel production, has been suffering from Iron ore & coal crisis on the backdrop of several mining restrictions imposed by the government and Supreme Court.
Sponge iron manufacturers across India have started cutting down their production on account of higher cost of raw material and lower margins. On the contrary, imported Scrap prices have been falling since past 1-month. Current offers for HMS 1&2 have fallen to USD 320-330/MT CIF Mumbai/ Chennai.
Viewing the current state of affairs, industry expects that Scrap imports will rise significantly in this fiscal year.
