West India Based Steel Mills Book South African Lump Import Vessel

As per sources, a Western India (Gujarat) based steelmakers reported a booking for 150,000 MT of South African lump. The vessel is for August shipment and is expected to arrive in the Aug’18 end or early September at Kandla port (Gujarat). SteelMint has also learned from the sources that, offers for South African lump for Sep’18 shipments are heard at around USD 90/MT, CFR.

“We have one Capesize lump vessel to be loaded in August and one more Supramax vessel to be loaded in August. We are getting good demand from India for September-December period owing to high domestic pellet prices in western India. However, the market in China is very strong for lumps”, shared a lump supplier.

Earlier this week, Jindal SAW pellet offers for Fe 63% were assessed at INR 7,350/MT, delivered Kandla.

South Africa contributed half of total Indian iron ore imports in June’18-:

India’s iron ore import from South Africa in June’18 recorded at 0.45 MnT, contributing 49% share of total Indian iron ore import, according to the customs data maintained by SteelMint. On a yearly basis, iron ore imports increased sharply as against 0.05 MnT in June’17.

For Q1 FY’19, South African exports to India recorded at 1.07 MnT, down 10% compared to 1.19 MnT in Q4 FY’18.
