- Purulia project to add 1.2 MTPA integrated steel capacity
- Company explores 800-day completion against 1,000-day schedule
- Project expected to strengthen local employment and ancillary ecosystem
Amit Metaliks is targeting faster execution of its INR 4,000-crore greenfield integrated steel plant at Raghunathpur in Purulia, West Bengal, with the company exploring whether the planned 1,000-day construction schedule can be compressed to 800 days. The project, for which the foundation stone was laid on 17 August, is expected to commence commercial operations by 2029 and add 1.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of steelmaking capacity in the state.
Integrated facility to expand steelmaking footprint
The project is being developed over around 151 acres and will comprise a pellet plant, direct reduced iron (DRI) unit, rolling mill, SEAF, forging and brick units, besides a 145-MW captive power plant. The integrated configuration is expected to strengthen Amit Metaliks’ raw material-to-finished steel chain while increasing the availability of value-added steel products from the Purulia region.
The proposed investment also comes as West Bengal sees increasing steel-sector capacity additions across Bankura and Purulia. This could gradually strengthen the state’s position as an eastern steel manufacturing hub, while supporting demand for logistics, power, engineering services and other ancillary activities.
Employment remains a key focus
Employment generation is emerging as a major driver behind the project. The facility is expected to create more than 5,000 direct jobs, with additional indirect employment likely across transportation, services and ancillary industries. The state government has also indicated a greater focus on employment generation while framing industrial incentives.
For Purulia, the project could therefore have a wider economic impact beyond steel production by creating local employment opportunities and reducing migration for industrial jobs.
Faster execution could set a benchmark
Amit Metaliks’ consideration of an 800-day execution timeline, against the original 1,000-day target, could become an important test of the state’s push for faster industrial project implementation. The company is expected to assess construction and implementation requirements before deciding on the accelerated schedule.
If executed within the proposed timeframe, the project could bring additional steelmaking capacity into operation earlier and accelerate the development of Purulia’s emerging industrial ecosystem. However, the pace of construction, project execution and timely commissioning of individual facilities will remain key factors in determining how quickly the planned capacity translates into actual production and employment.
