WCL Receives Environmental Nod to Raise Capacity

Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has received environmental clearance to scale up its coal production at its existing Ghonsa Open Cast Mine, situated in Maharashtra, by 15 MnT.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climatic Change has granted the clearance to WCL, a subsidiary of the state-run Coal India Limited, to raise the production at the mine from 0.45 MnT to 0.60 MnT.

The mine, situated at the Yavatmal district of the state, bears a total geological Non Coking coal reserve of around 20.50 MnT, out of which the mineable reserve is estimated to be at 4.90 MnT. The mine has coal linkage with Thermal Power Plants of Mahagenco.

WCL will use Open Cast mining method to extract mainly the G-9 grade coal.The capacity expansion is expected to enhance supply of Non Coking coal in the western and southern parts of the country.
