Vedanta Making Efforts to Raise Goa’s Iron Ore Production Cap to 37 MnT

Sesa Iron ore – a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources, is working with different industry bodies for mining infrastructure development to increase Goa’s iron ore production cap to 37 MnT pa from current 20 MnT pa.

As per an official, “together with various bodies, we are trying to build roads and other infrastructure so as to get a favorable response from the Supreme Court committee that is reviewing Goa’s EC cap of 20 MnT”.

The company is working with associations such as Goa Mineral Ore Exporters Association (GMOEA), Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) for creation of by-pass roads in mining areas. Around 67 km of by-pass roads have been identified that do not cut through villages, he added.

Mining is currently suspended in Goa owing to monsoon season. But Sesa Iron ore expects to make its all its mines operational post monsoon. Company’s environment clearance limit for the company is 5.5 MnT pa spread over all the leases and it plans to get small leases also back in operation to achieve the limit.

Goan iron ore production ramped up in FY16

FY16 turned out to be optimistic for Goa in terms of fresh iron ore production. Iron ore mining companies in Goa resumed iron ore production towards the end of Sep’15 following which state’s iron ore production witnessed an increase.

As per the provisional figures received to SteelMint, ROM (run of mine) production in Goa was recorded at 7.3 MnT in FY16. ROM refers to the unprocessed state of iron ore which comprises of impurities and is not 100% saleable commodity.
