Vedanta Ltd (formerly known as Sesa Sterlite/Sesa Goa), India’s largest private miner, led the resumption with a ceremonial opening at its Codli mine today.
The mining company has a permission to mine 5.5 MnT pa. Out of this, the Codli mine (Sanguem taluka in Goa) contributes to 3.1 MnT. Till date, the company has received clearance for its 5 mining plans & schemes by Indian Bureau of Mines and clearance of further 15 plans are still awaited. Vedanta Ltd has remained India’s largest private sector iron ore exporter but its operations were impacted by suspension of iron ore mining activities.
Shri Prasanna Acharya, Director of Mines, Goa said, – “Almost all other miners in Goa should get their licenses to restart mining operations in this fiscal year.”
Mining operations in Goa have remained suspended since last 3 years as Goa government temporarily suspended iron ore mining in September 2012, pending verification of documents in the wake of Justice M B Shah Commission’s report.
