According to latest customs data, USA flat steel imports which includes (7208 HR coils/Plates,7209 CR coils,7210, 7212 GP/GC and 7225 electrical sheets) registered growth of 13% to 1.17 MnT in Apr’18 as compared to 1.04 MnT in Mar’18.Similarly on yearly basis the same moved up by 21% in Apr’18 against 0.97 MnT in Apr’17.
During first four months of CY18 (Jan-Apr) nation’s flat steel imports summed upto 3.9 MnT higher by 7% as compared to 3.66 MnT in similar time period of previous year.
Owing to anticipation of tariffs to be imposed by Mr Donald Trump following the Commerce Department investigation on global imports of steel which pose a threat to national security has lead to stocking up as much material as they can prior to the imposition of the additional duty.Thus nation witness rise in import volumes in the month of Apr’18.
In March 2018,the Trump government announced steep tariffs of 25% and 10% on steel and aluminum imports, it temporarily exempted seven of its trade allies including Canada, Mexico, EU (European Union), South Korea, Brazil, Argentina, and Australia.

Country-Wise USA Flat Steel Imports in Apr’18 – Canada was the largest flat steel exporter in Apr’18 and has exported 0.39 MnT higher by 8.3% against 0.36 MnT in Mar’18.
Second largest exporter was South Korea which stood at 0.13 MnT in Apr’18 and remain unchanged since past two months.
Mexico stood as the third largest exporter and exported 0.09 MnT in Apr’18 ,surged by 13% against 0.08 MnT in Mar’18.
Other major countries include Vietnam at 0.07 MnT ,Germany at 0.05 MnT,followed by Taiwan at 0.04 MnT and Turkey at 0.05 MnT in Apr’18.
