Coal Exports have increased on the Monthly and Yearly basis; India came out as the top coal importer from the USA in Mar’17.
USA, one of the major coal exporters in the world, has witnessed an increase in their monthly coal exports of Mar’17. The country has exported 11.37 MnT against 9.54 MnT exported in the month of Feb’17, recording a growth of 19% M-o-M.
Exports have significantly gone up on the yearly basis, increasing 43% Y-o-Y compared with 7.95 MnT in Mar’16, according to the data released by the US Customs.
Coal Exports in 2017:
USA has raised its coal exports in CY17. During the first quarter of the year (Jan’17-Mar’17), the country has exported 30.73 MnT which is higher by 39% compared with 22.14 MnT coal, exported during the same period of the previous year.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
USA mainly exports Bituminous Coal (both Metallurgical and Thermal grade) and Pet coke, these coal commodities accounts for more than 95% of the total monthly exports of the USA.
Apart from these, small quantities of Coke & semi-coke, Anthracite and other grades of coal are also exported out of the country.
During Mar’17, exports of Anthracite coal fell over the month, while all other major coal grades’ shipments have increased on the monthly basis.

Quantities in MnT
Major Coal Importing Countries:
India overtook Netherlands as the top coal importer from the USA in Mar’17, with monthly imports improving by 17% M-o-M to 1.25 MnT.
However, coal imports from India in Mar’17 were still lower by 37% Y-o-Y compared with 1.99 MnT in Mar’16.
Netherlands, second-largest coal importer, received 1.07 MnT coal from the USA. Imports fell by 2% M-o-M compared with 1.09 MnT in Feb’17.
South Korea, the third-largest coal importer, recorded an increase of 89% M-o-M and 122% Y-o-Y in their monthly imports of Mar’17.
Apart from India, all other major coal importing countries from the USA have witnessed a growth in their coal shipments on the yearly basis, compared with that in Mar’16.
