US: GrafTech raises graphite electrode prices by minimum 30%

  • Higher input, logistics, energy costs drive price hike announcement
  • Company also plans to close manufacturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico

GrafTech International has informed customers of a minimum 30% increase in graphite electrode prices, effective immediately for all open commercial negotiations, as the producer seeks to restore pricing levels amid higher raw material, energy and logistics costs.

The increase builds on the pricing action announced in March 2026. GrafTech said graphite electrode prices have declined considerably over the past three years, while input and logistics costs have increased, making current pricing levels unsustainable.

The producer has undertaken workforce reductions and capacity idling to lower costs. It has also announced the planned closure of its graphite electrode manufacturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico, as part of efforts to align production with market conditions.

Graphite electrodes are essential consumables for electric arc furnace steelmaking. The latest increase therefore has implications for EAF steel producers, particularly if higher electrode prices are reflected across new contract negotiations.

GrafTech said the pricing action, together with capacity reduction and support for ongoing trade proceedings, forms part of its strategy to address structural challenges and support investment in production capabilities and supply reliability.

The announcement has already strengthened market sentiment towards graphite electrode producers. Shares of Indian graphite electrode producers rose sharply on 9 September following the global pricing move, indicating expectations of improved electrode realisations.
