US FY16 Coal Production Highest in Aug’15

The 2nd largest coal producer in the world, US, has yielded about 81 MnT of coal in Aug’15 against 75 MnT in July’15. The nation has registered a growth of about 8% in coal production in Aug’15 against the previous month.

EIA’s (US Energy Information Agency) latest report says that coal production in US has been recorded highest in Aug’15 for FY16, witnessing a growth of 8% M-o-M. It had produced about 75 MnT of coal in July’15.

However, a  downfall of about 7% Y-o-Y basis is registered in Aug’15. 81 MnT of coal was produced in Aug’15 against 87 MnT of coal in Aug’14 .

Reasons for falling coal production:

U.S. miners are continuously curbing their coal production, as continuous downfall in prices of gas is making it a cheaper source of energy compared to coal. This is ultimately leading to opening of more and more gas operated power plants. Also, strict rules and regulation against air pollution by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has compelled power players to use gas and other renewable sources of energy.
