Imports of copper products by the US were recorded at 115,131 tonnes (t) in October 2022, up 7% m-o-m as against 107,866 t in September. Of total imports, semi-finished products stood at 50,805 t (down 3%), finished products at 53,450 t (up 19%), and scrap at 10,876 t (up 3%).
The country’s cumulative copper imports was down by 23% y-o-y to 115,132 t in October 2022 compared from 149,085 t as compared against the previous year.
Country-wise imports
- Imports from Canada up m-o-m: Imports from Canada stood at 40,377 t in October which was up by 45% compared to September. On a y-o-y basis, the volumes increased by 15% from 35,067 t in October 2021.
- Imports from Chile surge m-o-m: Chile, a major copper exporter to the US, supplied 27,659 t in October, a rise of 19% m-o-m as against 34,058 t in the previous month. Shipments were drastically up by 61% y-o-y compared to 71,029 t in October 2021.
- Imports from Mexico decrease m-o-m: USA imported 9,636 t from Mexico in October, lower by 26% m-o-m from 13,040 t in September. On a y-o-y basis, the volumes inched up by 26% compared to 12,983 t in October 2021.
US’s copper exports stood at 148,226 t in October 2022, an increase of 2% as compared to September’s around 144,832 t. Out of which, ores/concentrates were down by 15% to 31,254 t, finished products were up by 13% to 26,519 t, semi-finished products were up by 2% to 9,914 t, scrap exports were up by 8% to 80,539 t m-o-m in October 2022.
The country’s copper exports were slightly up y-o-y by 2% to 148,226 t in October 2022 as compared to the previous year, which was around 144,550 t.
- Imports to Mexico up m-o-m: US’s export volume stood at 43,885 t in October 2022, an increase of 10% m-o-m from 39,933 t in September. The y-o-y export volume was up by 31% to 43,885 t in October 2022 compared to the previous year.
- Imports to China increase m-o-m: The export volume from US into China stood at 29,866 t in October 2022, a slight decrease of 1% m-o-m as against 30,233 t in September. On a y-o-y basis, export volumes were down by 13% to 29,866 t in October 2022.
- Imports to Canada fall m-o-m: US’s export volume to Canada stood at 20,570 t in October 2022, a fall of 3% m-o-m from 21,316 t in September. The y-o-y export volume was also down by 10% to 20,570 t in October 2022 compared to the previous year.
