Coal shipment from the United States (US) during Jan’17-Oct’17 has surpassed the total coal exports of CY16, according to the data provided by the US Customs.
World’s second-largest coal producers, US have exported 105.24 MnT coal during Jan’17-Oct’17 period, which is 11% more than the total coal exports of 95 MnT recorded in CY16 (Jan’16-Dec’16). The country had exported 76.12 MnT coal during the Jan’16-Oct’16 period.
US coal exports have been rising this year, ever since Trump’s government has come into the existence, with strong exports to its three biggest destinations: India, Japan and South Korea.
Japan and South Korea both have already surpassed their respective yearly coal imports of CY16, while India is on the verge of crossing its import total of the previous year.
US coal exports had also hit the highest monthly total for CY17, at 12.57 MnT in Oct’17. Exports increased 17% M-o-M from 10.78 MnT in Sep’17, which were also 63% higher on the year compared with 7.72 MnT in Oct’16.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
US Coking coal exports drop 14% M-o-M to 4.23 MnT, which was the highest exported coal grade from the country in Oct’17. Pet coke and Non-coking coal export had increased during the month.
Met coke and Anthracite coal were also exported in small quantity in Oct’17.

Major Coal Importers:
India replaced Japan to become the top coal importer from the US in Oct’17. US monthly coal shipments to India were also the highest for CY17, recorded at 1.83 MnT during the month.
Indian coal imports increased 63% M-o-M from 1.12 MnT in Sep’17, and were also 113% higher on the year compared with 0.86 MnT in Oct’16. Scare of coal available in the domestic market had forced buyers to turn towards US coal market to meet their demands.
Mexico was the second-largest coal importer in Oct’17. The country received 0.99 MnT coal during the month, which was higher both on the monthly and yearly basis.
Japan dropped to third amongst the top coal receivers during the month with total imports of 0.78 MnT in Oct’17. Coal imports fell 39% M-o-M, which were also 11% down from 0.88 MnT in Oct’16.
South Korea, Germany, Canada and China were the other major coal importer during the month.
