US coal exports have totaled 11.75 MnT in Feb’18, up 5% M-o-M from 11.22 MnT from Jan’18. On the yearly basis, export volumes in Feb’18 were 23% higher than the levels attained during Feb’17, when the country had exported 9.54 MnT coal.
US coal exports have started on a positive note in CY18, as the country has posted higher gains in exports during the first two months, on the year-on-year basis. As per the data provided by US customs, the country’s coal exports have rose 19% Y-o-Y to 22.97 MnT in Jan’18-Feb’18, against 19.36 MnT in Jan’17-Feb’17.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
The slight increase in US monthly coal exports had occurred despite the fact that non-coking coal exports from the country had fell 14% M-o-M to 2.78 MnT in Feb’18 compared with 3.22 MnT in Jan’18.
The growth in monthly coal exports was majorly attributed to the increase in Coking coal and Pet coke shipments from the country in Feb’18.
Coking coal exports had rose 17% on the month to 4.84 MnT in Feb’18, while export of Pet coke had increased 13% M-o-M to 3.52 MnT during the month.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
India remained the highest importer of US coal in Feb’18. However, monthly import from the country had decreased 18% M-o-M to 1.41 MnT in Feb’18. Yet, the import volume was 33% higher on the year compared with 1.06 MnT in Feb’17.
China had witnessed remarkable growth in coal imports from the US in Feb’18. Chinese coal imports had increased nearly 4-folds to 1.34 MnT on the monthly basis. On the yearly basis, imports had jumped 148% from 0.54 MnT in Feb’17.
Brazil was the third-largest importer of US coal in Feb’18. Coal imports from the country had grown both on the monthly as well as on the yearly basis, marked at 1.05 MnT during the month.
