US: Coal Exports Exhibit Modest Fall M-o-M in Jul’18

Coal exports from the US have remain almost unchanged on the month-on-month basis in Jul’18. Data from the US customs indicate that the country has exported 12.25 MnT coal in Jul’18 against 12.4 MnT in Jun’18, thereby registering a decline of 1% on the month.

The monthly fall in exports was supported by rather subdued import by its major customers-India and Japan.

However, the US continued to post higher gains on the yearly basis as exports in Jul’18 was 32% higher from 9.28 MnT recorded in Jul’17.

During the first 7 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Jul’18), US has exported 85.85 MnT coal, with an increase of 22% Y-o-Y from 70.49 MnT recorded in the same period last year. India (12.02 MnT) and Japan (7.26 MnT) have been the major coal receivers during the 7-month period.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Exports of Coking coal had dropped 13% M-o-M to 4.32 MnT in Aug’18, which was the only decline seen amongst the major coal grades.

Non-Coking coal was the second-largest exported coal grade in Jul’18, exports of which had increased 2% M-o-M to 3.66 MnT against 3.58 MnT in Jun’18.

Pet coke exports rose 12% on the month to 3.52 MnT in Jul’18.

Major Coal Importers in Jul’18:
India remained the largest coal importer from the US. Coal import by the country was down 39% M-o-M to 1.19 MnT in Jul’18, but was up 11% Y-o-Y from 1.07 MnT in Jul’17.

Mexico replaced Japan to become the second-largest coal receiver from the US in Jul’18. Coal import by Mexico increased 20% M-o-M to 1.18 MnT, while Japanese import was down 10% M-o-M to 1.04 MnT in Jul’18.

Among the other major coal receivers, Netherlands, Canada, Brazil, and Turkey had seen their imports rising in Jul’18, while import by China dropped 37% M-o-M to 0.48 MnT during the month.
