US coal exports have totaled 10.74 MnT in Apr’19, down 6% M-o-M from 11.39 MnT in Mar’19, as per the recent data provided by US customs. Export volumes were also 21% lower on the year from 13.62 MnT in Apr’18.
The weaker year-on-year comparison was due to exceptionally high exports in Apr’18, as US east coast terminals worked through a backlog of shipments caused by freezing weather earlier in the year. Apparently, export in Apr’18 was the highest monthly total attained during CY18.
In general, US exports have been affected by a comparatively weaker global demand this term, which have resulted in 10% fall in coal volumes during the first 4 months of CY19, noted at 43.91 MnT.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Exports of both coking and non-coking coal had come down on the month, while there was an appreciable growth in Anthracite coal shipments during Apr’19.
Coking coal export was down 15% M-o-M to 4.22 MnT in Apr’19, along with non-coking coal which had decreased 5% M-o-M to 2.73 MnT.
Anthracite coal exports had noted 4-fold increase on the month to 0.04 MnT in Apr’19.
Pet coke shipments, among the chief traded commodity from the US, was marked 6% higher on the month at 3.17 MnT.

Major Coal Importers:
India remained the largest coal receiver in Apr’19, despite recording a decline of 25% in monthly coal receipt from the US. The country had taken 1.64 MnT coal in Apr’19 against 2.19 MnT in Mar’19, which was also marked 6% lower on the year from 1.74 MnT in Apr’18.
Japanese coal imports witnessed a growth of 11% on the month to attain its highest monthly coal receipt for CY19. Imports had increased to 1.32 MnT in Apr’19 from 1.19 MnT in Mar’19.
Netherlands was the third-largest coal receiver from the US in Apr’19. Imports by the country had doubled during the month to 1.22 MnT.
Among the noticeable coal receivers, Canadian coal imports had surged 6-fold M-o-M to 0.97 MnT in Apr’19. Brazil, Ukraine, South Korea, Mexico and Egypt were the other major coal importers during the month.
