Coal exports by the US have dropped 17% on the year to 29.53 MnT during the third-quarter of CY19 driven by a hefty decline in non-coking coal shipments. The country had exported 35.77 MnT coal in the year-ago period.
Incidentally, export volume has been falling on the y-o-y basis unvaryingly for the past 8 months. Exports in Q3 CY19 had came down 7% on the quarter from 31.65 MnT noted in Q2 CY19.
US energy planner-EIA has highlighted how the reduced competitiveness of US coal exports in the global market. EIA stated in its short-term report that coal exports from the country is expected to face increasing competition from Eastern European sources, and that Russia will fill a growing share of coal trade, causing US coal exports to fall.
Apparently, export volume of US non-coking coal have reduced to half over the year to 5.4 MnT during the third quarter of CY19.
US coking coal was the largest traded commodity with exports of 12.23 MnT in Q3 CY19. However, export volume had fell 7% Y-o-Y from 13.18 MnT in Q3 CY18.
A comparatively better outcome was seen for coke products, with exports of Pet coke rising 2% Y-o-Y to 9.43 MnT, while Met coke exports were up 17% Y-o-Y to 0.21 MnT in Q3 CY19.

Major Coal Importers:
Japan was the largest coal receiver from the US. Japanese coal imports rose 14% Y-o-Y to 3.66 MnT in Q3 CY19, but had fell 9% on the quarter from 4.02 MnT noted in Q2 CY19.
Indian coal imports from the US dropped 15% Y-o-Y to 3.24 MnT in Q3 CY19, which was also marked 26% lower Q-o-Q from 4.37 MnT in Q2 CY19.
South Korea was the third-largest receiver with imports of 2.58 MnT coal in Q3 CY19.
