US coal exports in Jul’17 have fell on the monthly basis, but remained strong on the year compared with the exports during the same month in 2016, according to the data released by country’s customs.
US coal exports decreased 11% M-o-M to 9.28 MnT in Jul’17 compared with 10.4 MnT in Jun’17. However, on the yearly basis, exports have rose 38% in Jul’17 compared with 6.72 MnT in Jul’16.
Coal exports are surging under president Trump’s administration, which has pledged to revive the coal industry in the country. During the CY17 (till Jul’17), coal exports have increased 33% Y-o-Y to 70.50 MnT, in comparison with 52.99 MnT coal exported during Jan’16-Jul’16 period.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Coking coal, Pet Coke and Non-coking coal together account for more than 90% of the total monthly export in Jul’17. However, exports of Coking coal and Pet coke have fallen during the month, while Non-coking coal export has increased 9% M-o-M to 2.01 MnT in Jul’17.
Apart from these coal grades, Anthracite coal and Met coke were also exported from the country during the month.

Major Coal Importers:
India remained the top coal importer from the US in Jul’17, despite Imports falling 36% M-o-M to 1.07 MnT. Imports in Jul’17 were also 9% lower on the year compared with 1.18 MnT in Jul’16.
Brazil moved up to the second spot among major coal importers during the month. Coal imports rose 71% M-o-M to 0.89 MnT in Jul’17.
Japan was the third largest coal importer during the month, the country received 0.88 MnT coal in Jul’17.
South Korea, Netherlands, Canada and Mexico were the other major coal importers in Jul’17.
