United States, recorded iron ore imports at 0.67 MnT in Aug’18, up 16% as against 0.58 MnT in July’18. On yearly basis, imports recorded 8% increase as against Aug’17 imports at 0.62 MnT.
For CY’18 (Jan-Aug’18), iron ore imports witnessed at 3.49 MnT, down 23% as against 4.54 MnT same duration last year (Jan-Aug’17).
US crude steel production up 5% in Aug’18
United States crude steel production recorded 5% increase in Aug’18 at 7.46 MnT as against Aug’17 production at 7.1 MnT. On monthly basis, output increased marginally as against 7.38 MnT in July’18.
Brazil marked the largest iron ore exporter to United States
Brazil stood the largest iron ore exporter to United States in the month of Aug’18 with total quantity of 0.31 MnT, (down 31% M-o-M) contributing 46% share of total US import for the month, followed by Sweden at 0.12 MnT. Canada and South Africa recorded exports at 0.08 MnT each.

United States Iron Ore Exports down 12% M-o-M in Sep’18
United States iron ore exports for the month of Aug’18 witnessed at 1.35 MnT, down 12% on monthly basis as against 1.53 MnT in July’18. However, on yearly basis exports witnessed 13% fall as against 1.56 MnT a year ago.
For the duration Jan-Aug’18, the total iron ore exports by the country marked at 8.44 MnT, up 25% as against 6.75 MnT in last year same duration (Jan-Aug’17).
United States exports to Canada dropped 23% M-o-M
Canada stood the largest importer of iron ore from US in Aug’18 at 0.93 MnT, contributing 69% of total exports share, down by 23% on monthly basis. Japan stood the second largest importer at 0.34 MnT (up 13% M-o-M), followed by Mexico at 0.07 MnT.
