USA – the world’s fourth-largest importer of ferrous scrap after Turkey, South Korea and India observed a decline in scrap imports amid increased local consumption and jump in Pig Iron imports in Nov’18. As per customs data, United States imported 349,868 MT ferrous scrap in Nov’18, down 18% M-o-M as against 427,572 MT ferrous scrap in Oct’18.
On yearly premises, US scrap imports increased by 24% Y-o-Y as against 281,661 MT in Nov’17.
Port-wise – Top unloading port for scrap import activities in Nov’18 was Detroit (0.14 MnT) occupying highest 40% share. Followed by other major ports like Seattle (0.06 MnT), Buffalo (0.04 MnT), laredo (0.04 MnT) and Cleveland (0.03 MnT) occupying 17%, 11%, 11% and 9% share respectively.
Canada remained the largest scrap supplier to US – Canada remained the largest supplier to USA occupying 86% share in Nov’18. Canada supplied 299,365 MT in Nov’18, down 3% M-o-M as against 309,236 MT in Oct’18.
Mexico remained the second largest exporter supplying 49,305 MT in Nov’18. Scrap exports from Mexico recorded seven-year high which increased 20% M-o-M against 40,943 MT in Oct’18.
On the other hand, other major European suppliers like United Kingdom, Netherlands and Sweden supplied nil volumes of scrap in Nov’18.
Imports of HMS 1&2 bundles recorded highest followed by Shredded, HMS 1&2 and P&S scrap in Nov’18.

US crude steel production down 2% in Nov’18 – US crude steel production recorded at 7.399 MnT in Nov’18, down 2% as against 7.557 MnT in Oct’18. While the country observed a significant jump of around 56% M-o-M in Pig iron imports in Nov’18. Pig iron imports recorded at 611,255 MT as against 391,276 MT in Oct’18.
United States scrap imports up 6% during Jan-Nov’18 – United States imported 4.28 MnT ferrous scrap in during Jan-Nov’18, up 6% Y-o-Y as against 4.03 MnT during Jan-Nov’17. Increasing EAF outputs in the country is leading to rising scrap imports in line with a considerable increase in Pig Iron imports and rising local consumption as compared to last year.
US Crude steel production stood at 86.74 MnT during Jan-Dec’18 as compared to 81.61 MnT recorded during CY17.
