United States: Ferrous Scrap Imports Down 22% Q-o-Q in Q3 CY17

United States has witnessed fall in its ferrous scrap imports by 22% Q-o-Q in Q3 CY17.United States imported 1.01 MnT ferrous scrap in Q3 CY17 against 1.29 MnT ferrous scrap imports in Q2 CY17, while imports remained nearly unchanged Q-o-Q against imports in Q3 CY16.

As per recently released customs data, United States has imported 0.34 MnT ferrous scrap in Sept’17 which were marginally down by 6% M-o-M against 0.36 MnT imports in Aug’17.

In yearly comparison, ferrous scrap imports registered a significant rise of 48% Y-o-Y in Sept’17 as ferrous scrap imports were 0.23 MnT in Sept’16.

During the first nine months of CY17 (Jan-Sept’17), United States imported 3.38 MnT ferrous scrap with the hike of 19% against 2.85 MnT imports during the same period of last year.

USA is world’s second largest exporter of ferrous scrap after Europe-28 as well as it stood as the fourth largest importer of ferrous scrap after Turkey, South Korea and India. In CY16, US imported 3.60 MnT ferrous scrap.

Top unloading ports in US for scrap import activities were Detroit, New Orleans, Seattle, Charleston, and Buffalo.

Canada remained top supplier of ferrous scrap to US –

US continued to import the highest share of ferrous scrap from Canada (0.26 MnT, -10% M-o-M) followed by United Kingdom and Mexico which supplied 0.03 MnT ferrous scrap each to US in Sept’17. Japan exported 0.02 MnT ferrous scrap to United States in Sept’17.

During Jan-Sept’17, Canada exported highest 2.32 MnT ferrous scrap to US occupying 69% share of total ferrous scrap imports. United Kingdom remained second largest exporter to US with 0.43 MnT ferrous scrap exports followed by Mexico (0.20 MnT), Sweden (0.18 MnT), Netherland (0.15 MnT) and Japan (0.05 MnT) respectively.
