United States: Ferrous Scrap Exports Hit Three Years High in 2017

USA – world’s second largest exporter of ferrous scrap after EU-28 (Europe) has witnessed sharp increase in its scrap export volumes in 2017 and have recorded highest in last three years.

As per recently released customs data, United States has witnessed 16% Y-o-Y growth in ferrous scrap exports in 2017. The country exported 14.55 MnT ferrous scrap in 2017 as against 12.58 MnT scrap exports recorded in 2016. While the same was at 12.25 MnT in 2015.

United States exported 1.19 MnT ferrous scrap in Dec’17, down 25% M-o-M as against 1.59 MnT exports in Nov’17. On the other hand, if the yearly comparison is made ferrous scrap exports registered marginal ascent of 2% Y-o-Y with 1.17 MnT ferrous scrap in Dec’16.

During the first half of 2017, United States exported 6.48 MnT ferrous scrap which has increased by 25% to 8.08 MnT in H2-2017. Also, exports in H2-CY17 increased 15% Y-o-Y against 7.03 MnT exports in H2-2016.

United States witnessed increase in ferrous scrap exports by 11% Q-o-Q in Q4-CY17. As against 3.83 exports in Q3-CY17, United States ferrous scrap exports stood at 4.25 MnT in Q4-CY17.

Rise in ferrous scrap exports could be attributed to strong scrap demand and significantly increasing imports from Turkey, Bangladesh, Canada and Vietnam compared to last year.

Top loading ports in US for scrap shipping activities were Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Boston.

Turkey scrap imports from USA increased 15% Y-o-Y –

United States exported highest 3.63 MnT ferrous scrap to Turkey occupying 25% share of total scrap exports. Its import volumes have increased by 15% against 3.17 MnT in CY16.

Mexico remained second largest importer with 1.64MnT ferrous scrap followed by Taiwan (1.33 MnT), China (0.94 MnT), Canada (0.79 MnT) and Vietnam (0.71 MnT) respectively.

In 2017, Canadian ferrous scrap imports from United States surged almost 50% while Vietnam registered 87% growth as against ferrous scrap imports during CY16.

In Dec’17, USA continued to supply the highest share of ferrous scrap exports to Turkey (0.37 MnT) followed by Vietnam (0.14 MnT), Taiwan (0.13 MnT) while Mexico, China and Canada imported 0.06 MnT each from United States.

India, Bangladesh and Pakistan imported almost 2 MnT scrap from USA in CY17 –

In CY17, India imported 0.67 MnT (-36% Y-o-Y) ferrous scrap from USA while Pakistan and Bangladesh imported 0.64 MnT (+64% Y-o-Y) and 0.62 MnT (+114% Y-o-Y) ferrous scrap respectively. However, In Dec’17 Pakistan, India and Bangladesh each imported 0.04 MnT ferrous scrap from United States respectively.
