Ukraine: Flat rolled steel exports plunge over 70% y-o-y in CY22

Ukraine’s flat rolled steel exports plunged 73% y-o-y to 1.63 million tonnes (mnt) in calendar year (CY) 2022. Exports fell by 73.5% y-o-y to $1.35 billion.

In December 2022, flat rolled steel exports stood at 44,710 tonnes (t), down 16.9% m-o-m and 92.9% y-o-y.

Products exported in CY22:

1. Uncoated flat hot-rolled steel: The most exported flat hot-rolled product without coating stood at 1.3 mnt in CY22, down 72.5% compared to CY21.

2. Uncoated flat cold-rolled steel: Exports of uncoated flat cold-rolled steel products stood at 194,619 t, down 72% y-o-y.

3. Coated flat rolled steel: In CY22, exports of flat rolled products with galvanic or other coatings fell by 75.1% to 85,498 t compared to 2021.

Poland and Turkey were the leading export destinations with a share of 24.5% and 15.9%, respectively.

Post Russia’s invasion of Ukraine towards the end of February 2022, ferrous metals exports dropped steeply due to blockade of ports and other logistical hurdles, as well as the destruction of manufacturing facilities in Mariupol – Azovstal and the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works. Currently, Ukrainian steel manufacturers are actively looking for fresh opportunities to export steel products, but shipments can be made mainly to Europe.
