Turkish Scrap imports from US up by 25% in first quarter

Turkish steel mills
continue to prefer US Ferrous Scrap. Turkish steel mills are increasingly
attracted to the higher quality of US scrap, as official figures show a rise by
more than 25 percent from the country in the first quarter of 2012,
comperatively from the same period in 2011.

Further, Turks have imported around 1.24
million tonnes of Ferrous Scrap from US i.e. up by 25.1 percent. Import from US
also exceeds the growth of scrap import from EU, which rose 14.3%, according to
data from Turkish Iron & Steel Producers Association.

Turkey imported over 5 million tonnes of scrap
i.e. up by nearly 12 percent, with a value of US$ 2.38 billion. Consumption of
the material in the country also rose by around  12 percent to 8.13 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, Scrap imports from Russia stood at
438,000 MT by Turkish mills.

According to a market source, “This material
is in high demand specially from USA. The steel industry is majorly dominated
by mills who prefer US Scrap to manufacture semi finished products.”
