SteelMint accessed the latest quarterly report of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR). Prepared by Rolf Willeke, Statistics Advisor of BIR’s Ferrous Division, the highlights of the report are:
- China consumed 220.3 mn t of ferrous scrap in CY’20, up by 2% against 215.9 mn t in CY’19.
- Turkey, the leading scrap importer, recorded a 7.8% rise in scrap consumption to 30.77 mn t in CY’20.
- Japan witnessed lower steel scrap consumption in CY’20 at 29.18 mn t – a y-o-y decline of 13.4%.
- The EU recorded steel scrap consumption at 77.5 mn t – a straight drop of 10.3% compared to CY’19.
