Turkey Monthly Coal Import Drops Marginally in Feb’17

Turkey coal imports have fallen marginally by 0.75% M-o-M in Feb’17. The country imported 3.27 MnT in Feb’17 against 3.29 MnT in Jan’17. Imports have also fallen on the yearly basis by 7% compared with 3.52 MnT in Feb ’16, as per data released by Turkish customs.

Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Turkey mainly imports Bituminous coal for operating its coal-fired power plants and Coking coal, along with small quantities of Pet Coke, Coke and Anthracite.

In Feb’17, Bituminous coal imports have risen marginally by 0.24% M-o-M to 2.28 MnT. While imports of remaining coal commodities fell over the month, Pet coke imports saw an increase of 27% M-o-M to 0.09 MnT.

Quantities in MnT

Major Exporting Countries:
Colombia remained the top Coal supplier to Turkey in Feb’17, followed by Russia, USA, South Africa and Australia.

Colombia exported 1.23 MnT coal in Feb’17 down by 9% M-o-M compared with 1.35 MnT in Jan’17. Yearly exports have also fallen by 9%.

Russia second-largest coal exporter supplied 1.02 MnT coal with an increase of 19% M-o-M compared with 0.86 Mnt in Jan’17. Exports also rose by 13% Y-o-Y.

USA third-largest coal exporter also witnesses increase in coal supply to Turkey by 1% and 9% on the monthly and yearly basis respectively.

South Africa recorded major improvement in their monthly coal exports by 67% and supplied 0.16 MnT in Feb’17, however, it was less compared with 0.31 MnT in Feb’16 by 49%.
