Turkey: Iron Ore Imports Increase 36% M-o-M in May’18

The tenth largest importer of Iron ore, Turkey has recorded increase in iron ore imports in May’18. The imports recorded at 1.05 MnT in May’18, up 36% M-o-M as against 0.77 MnT in Apr’18. The Y-o-Y imports witnessed increase of 14% in May’18 as against 0.92 MnT in May’17.

Turkey’s crude steel production for May’18 witnessed at 3.36 MnT, up 12% on monthly basis as against 3.0 MnT in Apr’18. For Jan-May’18, the crude steel production recorded at 15.85 MnT, up 6% as against 14.9 MnT for same period previous year.

For the duration Jan-May’18, the country recorded fall of 13% in imports at 4.25 MnT as compared to 4.87 MnT for same period last year (Jan-May’17).

The non-agglomerated ore (Lumps and Fines) witnessed a rise of 71% M-o-M in imports to 0.6 MnT in May’18 as against 0.35 MnT in Apr’18. The Y-o-Y imports stood up by 54% in May’18 as against 0.39 MnT in May’17.

Agglomerated ore (pellets and concentrates) recorded a rise of 7% in monthly imports at 0.45 MnT for May’18 as compared to 0.42 MnT in Apr’18. The Y-o-Y import recorded decline of 15% in May’18 as compared to May’17 imports at 0.53 MnT.

Brazil iron ore exports to Turkey increased to twice on monthly basis

Brazil continued to be the largest exporter of iron ore to Turkey in May’18 at 0.54 MnT, contributing 51% share of total Turkey’s iron ore imports. The imports from Brazil recorded increase to twice M-o-M as against Apr’18 imports at 0.27 MnT, followed by Sweden and South Korea at 0.17 MnT each.

Russia and Ukraine marked decline in monthly iron ore exports to Turkey in May’18 at 0.12 MnT (down 14% M-o-M) and 0.06 MnT (down 45% M-o-M) respectively.
